Anger and Liver Disease

The Connection Between Our Emotions and Organs

In traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), it is believed that emotions and our physical organs are intimately connected whereby emotions impact the health of the body and vice versa.

Emotional imbalances can act as both symptoms and causes for physical issues.

Specifically, emotions are narrowed down to five basic states that are each associated with a corresponding organ in the body:

Anger with the liver
Joy with the heart
Sadness and grief with the lung
Worry with the spleen and stomach

How Anger Affects the Liver

Anger causes the liver’s energy flow to be blocked. If intensed enough, this congestion causes a sensation of heat rising up to the head, often showing up as a red face and blood shot eyes. Imbalance in the Liver system also manifests physically as headaches, waking up between 1-3AM, pain in the neck and shoulders and indigestion.

When anger becomes chronic, it could lead to liver disease.

Research Linking Anger to Liver Disease

i) Link Between Anger and CRP
Researchers at Duke University Medical Center published a paper in the 2004 Journal of Psychosomatic Medicine which states that otherwise healthy people who are prone to anger, hostility and mild to moderate depressive symptoms produce higher levels of C-reactive protein (CRP). CRP a chemical in the body known to promote cardiovascular disease and stroke. Involved in plaque development and plaque’s clogging up of arteries, CRP is produced by the liver in response to inflammation.

ii) CRP and the Liver
A group of Israeli researchers reported in the 2005 edition of the journal Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis, and Vascular Biology that elevations of liver enzymes correlate with higher CRP concentrations. High liver enzymes are an indicator of liver damage.

Excessive outbursts and repression of anger both hurt the liver.

If we want to live in harmony with ourselves and others, we need to find a way to feel our emotions and let them flow through us, while expressing them appropriately, without offending or hurting others. The first step is to resolve the anger within before we can arrive at a conducive state where peaceful and assertive communication can be initiated.
